Your transport options to the country side destination
For your transport to the country side destination you have three options but we recommend the first two:
A' rent a car
Please note that if you don’t have a driver’s license from another EU country, you may be asked to produce an international drivers license! A lot of Greek car rental agencies will overlook it, but you could run into trouble if you are pulled over for one reason or another.
If you rent a car
1) make sure to get a small car, as you know Greek city streets and country roads are much more narrow than their Northern American equivalents!
2) It's a myth that Greeks drive like crazy. However, they are not the most considerate or law-abiding drivers. You will need to pay full attention when driving in Greece.
B' using the Buses
KTEL is the intercity bus network that covers all cities and localities in mainland Greece. Please have a look in our post about the KTEL buses and Terminals in Athens.
C' The train
The rail network of Greece is not well-organized. It's slow and buses in Greece are used for most travel purposes between main Greek cities. However for a long day trip to Meteora it's a perfect choice.
